On the evening of March 12, 2018, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong.
Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping took time out of his busy schedule for the “Two Sessions” to meet with you, which fully reflects China’s firm determination to safeguard peace and stability on the Peninsula, and is also the full recognition for the ROK’s efforts in promoting the easing of tensions on the Peninsula.
Wang Yi expressed that China supports the ROK and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in improving relations, and welcomes the United States and the DPRK to engage in contacts and dialogue at an early date. The current positive situation on the Peninsula conforms to the stance and proposition that China has consistently adhered to, accords with the fundamental interests of local people, and complies with the common expectation of the international community. President Xi Jinping stressed that with utmost sincerity, no difficulty is insurmountable. It is hoped that various parties could uphold this spirit, meet each other half waymeet each other half-waywork toward the same goal and form synergy, in a bid to jointly open up a new future for the Korean Peninsula.
Chung Eui-yong said that recently, there are some significant changes in the Korean Peninsula situation, in which China has played an important role. The ROK commits to pushing forward the denuclearization on the Peninsula and the process of the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation, and stands ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with the Chinese side. The ROK expects China to continuously play an active role.
